Labor Day weekend is often seen as the last hoorah of summer — a final chance to enjoy the outdoors, gather with friends and family, and relax before the busy fall season kicks in. But beyond the BBQs and beach days, this long weekend offers something incredibly valuable: the opportunity to unplug and recharge.
For individuals with ADHD, and even for those without, the constant demands of everyday life can be overwhelming. The need to stay organized, manage time, and maintain focus often feels like a never-ending cycle. That’s where executive function comes into play. These cognitive skills — like planning, working memory, and self-control — are crucial for navigating daily tasks. But like any muscle, they need time to rest and recover.
The Necessity of Downtime
Taking breaks isn’t just a luxury; it’s a necessity, especially for those with ADHD. Downtime allows the brain to recover from the cognitive load of managing tasks, making decisions, and staying on top of responsibilities. Without sufficient rest, executive function skills can become strained, leading to increased stress, decreased productivity, and even burnout.
The long Labor Day weekend is the perfect time to press pause. By unplugging from work, school, and other daily obligations, individuals can give their brains the break they need to recharge. This period of rest helps restore executive function, making it easier to tackle upcoming challenges with renewed energy and focus.
The Balance Between Productivity and Rest
Finding the right balance between productivity and rest is essential, and this is where Play Attention comes into play. Inspired by NASA technology and backed by Tufts University research, Play Attention is designed to strengthen executive function skills, helping individuals with ADHD achieve this balance more effectively.

How to Unplug and Recharge This Labor Day
This Labor Day, consider setting aside intentional time to unplug and recharge. Here are a few ideas:
- Digital Detox: Take a break from screens — whether it’s work emails, social media, or even TV. Use this time to engage in offline activities that bring you joy and relaxation.
- Mindful Moments: Practice mindfulness through meditation, deep breathing exercises, or simply sitting quietly in nature. These moments of calm can help reset your mind and prepare you for the days ahead.
- Physical Activity: Engage in gentle physical activities like walking, yoga, or swimming. Physical movement not only helps clear your mind but also supports overall well-being.
- Quality Time: Spend time with loved ones without the distraction of electronic devices. Whether it’s playing board games, having a picnic, or just chatting, these moments can strengthen connections and provide a mental break.
- Reflection: Take a moment to reflect on your personal and professional goals. Use this time to assess where you are and where you want to be, but without the pressure to take immediate action.
By consciously unplugging this Labor Day, you give yourself the gift of rest — a crucial element in maintaining and enhancing your executive function skills. And with the ongoing support of Play Attention, you can continue to strike the perfect balance between productivity and rest, not just during the holidays but throughout the entire year.
Remember, taking a break isn’t just about stepping away; it’s about recharging your mind so you can return with greater focus and energy. So, this Labor Day, give yourself permission to relax — you’ve earned it.
Using Play Attention at home
I have read several reviews of Play Attention in professional settings however, we have been using Play Attention at home with lots of success. We decided to do the home program as all of us have varying degrees of ADHD (myself, my partner, and our 3 children). The program was easy to set up and we were able to set up a customized program for each of us. We all do our training for about an hour per week. We have been working for about 4 months now and I can see significant improvements in my attention and memory. I find at work I am not waiting until the very last second to get jobs done. This has alleviated a lot of stress I was feeling at work. My kids are definitely able to finish their homework without so much prompting and redirection. My daughter who is 13 was really struggling with emotions. She is much better at regulating those emotions now so we are not experiencing as many outbursts. I know we still have to put in more time in order to get things to “stick” but I am truly happy with the results we have seen so far. It has been a great family investment.

Play Attention will allow me to know how to stay mentally active throughout my ‘golden’ years
The ACADEMIC BRIDGE program also has proven invaluable to me, when I use it during menial tasks such as clearing my desk, doing guitar exercises, filling out my datebook calendar, & returning emails. I have confidence that it will continue to provide a ‘touchstone’ to confidently allow me to know how to stay mentally active throughout my ‘golden’ years.
